San Gabriel Valley after-school programs grow with new funds

According to a recent story in the Whittier Daily News, 20 school districts throughout the San Gabriel Valley, including Pasadena, El Monte, Garvey and Pomona school districts, received ASES funds to implement or expand after-school programs.

The Garvey School District received enough ASES funds to allow their partnership with statewide after-school program Woodcraft Rangers to expand to all 12 of the district’s elementary and intermediate school sites.

Said Anita Chu, assistant superintendent for instructional services, to the Daily News, “Our district is committed to providing quality after-school programs. It's really one of the most important components.”

“Research tells us that from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. is the most dangerous time of day for young people – when crime involving youths doubles – as they leave school and return to an empty household or neighborhood street unsupervised. The answer, according to a consensus of experts, is to provide afterschool programs in every community.”
